The Pacific Northwest is a vital economic region, home to some of the world’s most well known technology organizations and entrepreneurs. With the emergence of technology-based economic development; we are reminded the importance of these organizations and those who support them; as well as the fact that technology drives innovation across sectors and leads to the creation of new industries. This comprehensive approach to economic development and the attention paid to factors such as the university’s role in economic development is essential to both our individual and collective ability to compete in an increasingly global innovation economy.
A Resource Guide for Technology-based Economic Development prepared by SSTI for the US Economic Development Administration identifies the following as required elements for technology-based economic development:
An intellectual infrastructure, i.e. universities and public or private research laboratories that generate knowledge and discoveries
Mechanisms for transferring knowledge and discoveries from one individual to another or from one company to another
Physical infrastructure that includes high quality telecommunications systems and affordable high speed internet connections
Highly skilled technical workforce
Sources of risk capital
Quality of life, and
Entrepreneurial culture
PNWER is currently developing the Pacific NorthWest Innovation Network; a program that supports and enhances technology-based economic development initiatives among our member jurisdictions. This effort seeks to support and leverage our individual strengths; while acknowledging our collective ability to address challenges and create greater opportunities for success in technology-based economic development across the region.
