The PNWER 2011 Winter Meeting
Victoria, British Columbia
November 16-19, 2011
Thank you to all who joined us for the 2011 Winter Meeting at the Fairmont Empress in Victoria British Columbia. Highlights included:
- The Economic Leadership Forum provides an opportunity for local state and provincial leaders in both the public and private sectors to carry out in-depth, focused discussions on key subjects identified by the Executive Committee at the Annual Summit.
The Economic Leadership Forum began on the afternoon of Thursday, November 17 with a joint session with the Legislative Leadership Academy, focusing on cross-border cooperation, the Beyond the Border work-group, and financing transportation infrastructure for the region. We looked at the success of Public-Private Partnerships in financing infrastructure, and the importance of our intermodal system for future development. The Economic Leadership Forum continued on Friday with a morning session on Innovation, and an afternoon session on Energy Storage.
- The Legislative Leadership Academy is designed to assist elected legislators develop important relationships with their counterparts across the border, and better understand the practical differences between the state and provincial political systems through a series of hands-on workshops. - The Legislative Transportation Institute was hosted by our partner the Cascadia Center. The Legislative Transportation Institute provides elected transportation leaders the opportunity to gain a deeper knowledge of transportation issues and the impact on livability, economic vitality, and environmental sustainability. The Victoria sessions focused on the interface between freight, rail, and the marine ports and ferry system. The Institute brought together public and private sector transportation leaders and innovators from across the Northwest states and western Canadian provinces to share best practices, ideas and solutions to enhance trade, commerce, and mobility in the PNWER region.
The 2011 agenda featured subjects in the following areas: Innovation; Energy Storage; and Transportation.

The PNWER 2011 Winter Meeting will begin with the Legislative Leadership Academy open to legislators only on November 16 - 17. The afternoon of the Thursday 17 will kick-off the Economic Leadership forum sessions with a joint session on cross-border policy discussion with the Legislative Leadership Academy. Friday, November 18 will feature sessions on Innovation, Energy Storage, and a continuation of the Legislative Transportation Institute.
